The Salty Shore, Rockaway Beach

One of my favorite retreats for special occasion on the Oregon Coast is a gorgeous house in Rockaway Beach. Located steps from the water, this magical bungalow feels like my very own surfy, mellow Beach House.

My favorite spot to read a book (or make a post!)

You may remember two summers ago I brought my mom here for a special getaway. I have never traveled with my mom as an adult before. I may never get to again, as she has a hard time with travel and is a full time caretaker of my dad who is a cancer survivor. The trip was so important- more on our itinerary at the end. This time I was back again for another one time event- my 40th birthday.

Wild and windy 40th birthday in Rockaway

Born in late February, my birthday has always been at the end of brutal winter storms. Of the 30 plus birthdays I’ve spent on the coast (my pisces heart wants nothing more) this was one of the most severe, weather wise.

50+ miles an hour winds on the beach!

Most of the trip was dark and moody (the weather anyway)

Winds upwards of 70 miles an hour, relentless sheets of rain, lost power to over 100k across the state and even a tornado warning! However, inside the Salty Shore we were safe, dry, and warm.

Cozy morning with coffee and books

I arrived with a checklist a mile long of places I wanted to visit. I also wanted to walk many miles on the beach. The beach however was swallowed by high tides and smashing, angry waves. Luckily, there was lots to do in our little beach hideout.

I want a chair like this!

Love a fireplace and comfy couches

I love this house because it is a split level with two living areas- both with their own vibe and view of the ocean.

There are lots of spaces for relaxing and playing games.

Because it was my birthday I wanted to try takeout from the Old Oregon Smokehouse- I’ve heard this is one of those iconic spots with fish and chips, smoked salmon, oysters, and more.

I brought my own party supplies- this year’s theme was disco cowgirl. I’d planned to frolic in my “Vegas dress” a white sparkly number I’ve tried to wear three times now- but every time the universe had different plans. I stuck to sweats to match the storm. Is this post 40 life?

40!

My plan to stick little boots and hats in to shrimp and oysters however did go off swimmingly!

Shrimp and a hat!

Flavors of The Forest, raw garlic dust- my favorite thing on oysters.

Now thats a party

We no sooner finished our party when the lights flickered out, not to return again. Luckily I’d also packed candles. I spent the night sitting up listening to the howling winds.

My Royal Bee candle, for when the power went out.

The next morning we got a few minutes of reprieve from the barrage of wet and wild. Enough time to step onto the deck and snaps some pics of Twin Rocks.

Morning after the storm, Twin Rocks.

I was happy to swing in the chair, contemplating four decades of storms and remembering that every single one so far- has moved on. Spring is right around the corner….the light returns.

This view.

The Salty Shore is cozy and big, featuring 3 bedrooms (one with bunks) and two bathrooms, two living rooms, two fridges, a large, very well stocked kitchen. There are games, blankets, books, and lots of places to sit outside (when the weather allows).

A good birthday indeed.

The kitchen is well stocked.

Queen bed upstairs (there is a king downstairs)

This trip was unique because it allowed me to be grateful for shelter in a storm, to flex my ability to go with the flow, and to appreciate the sun when it comes. It may have taken a long time to develop those skills….patience, perseverance, gentleness as strength- but they are mine now. Never say die.

Goonies never say Die!

Thanks for adventuring with me.

Highlights from the beachtrip with my mom:

Summer beaches are bigger and great for walking

Fresh caught rockfish, halibut encrusted- from The Fish Peddler and Pacific Oyster

Riding the Oregon Coast Scenic Railway

A relaxing journey along the coast on a historic railroad

The Rockaway Cedar Wetlands Preserve

The original Pronto Pup! If you know you know.

El Trio Loco III- excellent Mexican food in Rockaway.

The Salty Shore is available to book on Vacasa.
